2025 (Blog)

(Follow my progress with the new office build-out - click here)

It’s the weekend before opening day! We tried to follow up with as many people as possible, but if we missed you by accident, please reach out!

The office is still in progress (see build-out) with a folding table and chairs as waiting room furniture, but the important elements are all in: state-of-the-art imaging equipment, optimized patient flow, and of course, trustworthy patient-first care. I can’t wait to see you.

PS - my practice website is now live! Still a work in progress, but check it out: www.phRetina.com

end of September 2025

Everyday is a blur. I am working at lightning speed to move things along as quickly as possible. Follow the office build out (click here) and stay tuned… we will start to take appointments next week and plan to open September 29 (fingers crossed).

September 2025

We are a step closer everyday. My first employee and office manager, Denneica, has joined me and has been instrumental in patient follow up. We have opened our calendar and are starting to book appointments. We are overwhelmed with positive support from our community, so thank you (both for your support and for your patience :)

There are a lot of updates coming, so stay tuned…

September 2025

Practice start-up has been slow but steady. I am pleased to announce….

August 2025

an anticipated start date of Sept 29, 2025!

June 2025

Unfortunately, shortly after letting my practice know of my plans to leave, they told me that I am unable to come into the office to continue seeing patients, effective immediately. All of my email and other IT systems access has been cut off. I feel most sorry for my patients, whom I have not been able to speak with personally. I will continue to work on building out my Nanuet, NY office to be able to continue to provide patient-first retina care. Stay tuned for a Fall opening, and as always, reach out with any questions!

(a few days after the below)

Big news! After working at NJRetina for 9 years, I just gave my 3 month notice that I will be leaving to start my own practice in Nanuet, NY, just outside my non-compete zone. I have worked in academia (Duke University Eye Center) and in a large retina-only private practice (NJRetina). Over the next 3 months, I look forward to working with my patients and their doctors as we work out a transition plan. I am anxious but excited for this new adventure, and I hope the new practice will be open in Fall, 2025!

Continue to follow this BLOG, I look forward to updating you with my progress!

American Society of Retina Specialists Annual Meeting

Long Beach, CA

July 2025

I spent a fantastic week at the annual ASRS (American Society of Retina Specialists) annual meeting in Long Beach, CA. My apologies for the delay in getting back to so many of you who have reached out while I was away. In addition to multiple presentations, I serve as a member of the Board and of the Executive Committee of this society, so this meeting is non-stop busy; thank you for your patience.

The meeting content was fantastic. There are so many innovations in treatments and surgery that were highlighted and bring hope for improved future treatments. Dr Gaurav Shah, as program director of this year's meeting, really raised the bar!

And the meeting sponsors stepped up as well. The Surgery Experience Centers highlighted cutting edge surgical equipment. Of course, various medical treatments, including for newly approved macular telangiectasia, were prominent. And office device companies were well-represented.

Thanks to great information at the meeting, I have now purchased an OCT machine and an ultrasound that will be coming to the office when ready.

A lot is happening behind the scenes with the office. I have selected an electronic medical record and practice management system and am starting to get trained on these. We are (still!!) waiting for permits to come back for the build-out. Stay tuned!!

American Society of Retina Specialists Business of Retina Meeting

Atlanta, GA

March 2025

The ASRS BoR meeting this year was interactive and exciting. Seeing pioneers incorporating artificial intelligence technology into their practices, learning how to best manage workflow and staffing, and of course, discussing practice challenges (such as the Good Days chronic disease fund unfunding) made for a vibrant meeting. It was great to learn, educate, and network.

January 2025

As always, meeting with great visionaries represented across the ASRS Board is thrilling. The role of ASRS remains critical in protecting the rights of retina specialists. It remains my privilege to contribute to the Board. And spending a weekend in Laguna Beach during a cold NJ winter wasn’t so bad!

American Society of Retina Specialist Board Meeting

Laguna Beach, CA

Lack of Good Days copay assistance funding is truly limiting access to vision-saving therapies for many patients. As a retina community, we need to continue to call on industry, among others, to support these foundations and help patients in need.

Advanced Retinal Therapies (ART) Annual Meeting

Vienna, Austria

Thank you, Dr Ursula Schmidt-Erfurth, for your kind invitation to come to Vienna to present on evolving treatment paradigms for diabetic macular edema and geographic atrophy/macular degeneration. There was so much discussion, excitement, and knowledge during a fantastic meeting. And you can’t beat Christmas-time in Vienna - the Markets were spectacular!
